I’ve been taking photos for as long as I can remember, but I never really felt like any social media platform was the right place for my work. I started out on Flickr ages ago — I have good memories of it, though I was still just a kid. I never got into Instagram, mostly because I didn’t want to be stuck curating a perfect-looking feed. It wasn’t until I found Substack that I finally felt like I had a space that actually works for me.
Agreed. I see so many comments on the Substack subreddit complaining about Notes but I don't find it to be vanity driven, or people pretending to live glamorous lifestyles like on FB or IG. Or maybe they're just following the wrong people?
I totally agree. I don't think Substack could ever really grow or connect people so well if it wasn't for the notes features. It might be imperfect but it does allow for more personable, casual interactions outside the perfectly curated posts we make. For now it still feels well balanced, and I love that.
I also use this space for inspiration. I am trying to learn watercolor and I am using lots of peoples pics as “studies” in my notebook as I learn. It’s not ‘stealing’ ideas I hope, but maybe an echo? Call and response? But I love when a visit here makes me leave here and go BE elsewhere.
Thank you for writing this. I found it calmingly and reassuringly reflective 🙏 and what a sunflower! 😍 That’s the desk of a creative if ever I saw one! I know what you mean about discomfort with the label though. I have always felt the same. I think it’s important to let ourselves create whatever we feel drawn to, regardless of whether we feel the label fits. Then one day, when we’re not looking, we might realise it fits perfectly.
